Gender Workshop

In November 2013, the Rwanda Correctional Service hosted the Kigali Corrections Expert Workshop on behalf of the Group of Friends of Corrections. The objective of the workshop was to address the shortage of female corrections experts who are ready for deployment to United Nations peace operations. Areas of focus included the selection, recruitment, retention and training of female correctional experts. Furthermore, deployment best practices and repatriation considerations were developed.

The workshop helped build awareness and further the goals of United Nations resolution 1325, concerning the role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts and had an impact on the number of female corrections experts deployed to United Nations missions. As of December 2015, government provided corrections personnel had the highest rate of females among uniformed United Nations personnel at 29%.
